Create a dynamic work environment
Generation Z and Millennials are known for their short attention spans and the need for constant stimulation to stay focused. Growing up in a digital world has accustomed them to hyperconnectivity, leading them to prefer an open office layout that allows them to stay attuned to all activities in the workspace. Unique office environments that prioritize experiences, incorporating playful or innovative elements, help keep them productive by providing the stimulation they thrive on.
In contrast, Generation X often prefers a more traditional office setup with private spaces. While playful office features are less significant to them, they value a work environment that offers the freedom to approach their tasks in their own way. Private spaces provide a retreat where they can work independently and concentrate without distractions.
So, which generation should you prioritize when designing your office space? According to generational expert Aart Bontekoning, the key lies in giving both younger and older generations a sense of influence over their work environment. “Giving too much influence to one generation sparks resistance. ‘What about us?’ they might say or think.” Striking a balance where all generations feel heard and involved is essential.
